HERITAGE WORTH FIGHTING FOR ‘Save Our Huts’ Campaign ORAL HISTORY PROJECT History NEWS Contact
The Ripon Military Heritage Trust (RMHT) has been established to research, conserve, interpret and provide access to the tangible and intangible military heritage of the city of Ripon and its environs.
The Trust was formed as a result of extensive research carried out by the Ripon Civic Society in response to a planning application for a new urban extension on land currently used by the MoD at Claro and Deverell Barracks.
When these proposals were being developed there was no clear understanding of the significance and importance of the military heritage at the site. Some limited work had been carried out with regard to the Second World War timber huts at Deverell Barracks but no adequate study of the whole area had been undertaken.
Work carried out by RMHT has shown, without question, that the site is one of very considerable national and international importance.
The Trust is advocating that a number of surviving structures be preserved on a site at Laver Banks and that a military heritage centre is developed, alongside a military heritage trail. Without your help this important military legacy may be lost forever.
RMHT has secured a grant to acquire recording equipment that will be used to capture memories of military activity in the Ripon area during and after the Second World War. The Trust is now appealing for people with relevant stories to tell who would be happy to be interviewed, and for volunteers to undertake the interviews.
Ripon has a significant military history that is rich and varied. Spanning across multiple conflicts with many international connections, it deserves more recognition.
